American Slang Word of the Day

I’m on many Oxford email lists and one that I particularly look forward to receiving is the American Slang Word of the Day. Today’s word is too much fun not to share with you:

jelly-belly n.

1. a person having a fat belly.

2. a coward. Also as quasi-adj.

As in, I haven’t made it to the gym in ages and now I have a jelly-belly. Almost makes getting fat fun!

“Jelly-belly” is from the “Historical Dictionary of American Slang,” edited by Jonathan E. Lighter. Stay tuned for information on the release of volume III from Oxford University Press.
