Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is chiefly remembered for his creation of the amateur detective Sherlock Holmes, whose brilliant solutions to a wide variety of crimes began in A Study in Scarlet (1887) and continued through a long line of stories, collected in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1892), The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (1894), The Hound of the Baskervilles (1902), and other works. Doyle also wrote a long series of historical and other romances, notably Micah Clarke (1889); The White Company (1891); The Exploits of Brigadier Gerard (1896); and The Lost World (1912), the first of a series of stories dominated by Professor Challenger. Doyle later wrote many books on public themes. He published a History of Spiritualism in 1926, a subject in which he was greatly interested.
