My co-authors and I would argue that ignorance is not the root cause of prejudice and discrimination. We know that many knowledgeable people (health professionals for example) are unfair in their treatment of people who have a mental illness. Prejudice and discrimination go much deeper than misinformation and ignorance and will require more than education to eradicate.

I have to agree with Mr. Malo. It is not so much the "stigma" but ignorance of individuals who would continue to give misinformation power.

Ableism is just as nefarious as racism, sexism and homophobia in relation to anyone being able to heal. I hope that the trainings being introduced in these formal settings look at all issues of prejudice and the impact it may have on mental health.

When asked, many people with (a) mental illness will say that the consequences of the stigma of mental illness are worse than the illness itself.

I did not miss your qualifier, "many." It is the equivalent of "some," has no actual measure.

Nor do I accept the promotion of a "stigma."

When asked, many people with a mental illness will say that the consequences of prejudice are considerable.

The intent of the term "stigma" is to direct blame -away from- the person uttering the prejudice, and -toward- the person against whom she/he has the prejudice. It is a common device. The claim of the "stigma" of Jews made them the victims of Hitler. Who directs that term victimizes.
