Thanks for this useful piece. I will share it with a family I work with right away. I especially like your observation that demonstrating by example is a much more effective way to teach than lecturing. The latter only adds to the shame the child feels. Useful tips for concerned parents.

This is a great article. It's such an educative piece that every serious parent needs to read and articulate for the positive development of their children. We, as parents, should not continue to think that we know our children so well that we don't need to learn new things about how to take care of their emotional needs anymore.

Children learn from their role-models and the best role-model should be the parents, not the artistes or sportsmen and women your children get exposed to on daily basis, especially on television. Majority of these type of role-models fall short of the expected moral standard right-thinking parents would want for their children.

This was a great piece, an insightful glimpse into the minds of children. I found the most useful bit the one where you talked about setting an example as the most important way to teach. You are right: children will emulate their role-models.

Dear Ken,
What a wonderful and important piece. I hope people read and utilize what you have written. These themes make such differences in how our children develop and learn to cope in a very challenging environment. Thank you for sharing that information.
