I would like to have some quantities; does a pilgrimage cost 1 or 10 years' annual pay? Is it a Blackadder thing or does Baldric go too? I would also like to know about the practicalities: is the State so small that there are no border guards/policemen? And in what currency do I pay for food and accommodation? Are English silver nobles accepted in Galicia? Is credit available? Re: Canterbury+Durham, how many pilgrims come from the countries that now form the UK and how many from elsewhere in Europe?

I can imagine posh English pilgrims making themselves understood in Western France, but those from what is now Germany might face a higher linguistic barrier.

Final historical note: since the Holy Roman Empire was neither holy, nor Roman, nor an empire, does that make it a worthy predecessor to today's increasingly fissile European governance arrangements?
