Another writer in N & Q that same year (Sept. 7, p. 231) has a suggestion with relevant earlier quotes (quotes that could be supplemented, if interested). 1650: "...English bor'd also through the nose this way, by paying excessive prices...." Including quotes from Shakespeare, the possibility becomes that one was "led by the nose," gulled, tricked, led like a dumb animal by a string through a nose hole. J.H.
