Marcus Daniel On Backstory

Scandal & Civility: Journalism and the Birth of American Democracy by Marcus Daniel, associate professor of American History at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, offers a new perspective on the most influential, partisan journalists of the 1790s. Daniel reminds us that journalists’ rejection of civility and their criticism of  the early American government were essential to the creation of modern-day politics.  On March 27th, Daniel was interviewed on Backstory, a brand-new public radio program that brings historical perspective to the events happening around us today. On each show, renowned U.S. historians Ed Ayers, Peter Onuf, and Brian Balogh tear a topic from the headlines and plumb its historical depths.  They have been kind enough to let us excerpt a clip here.  Check it out below.  To listen to the whole show click here.
