Gary Macmillan misses the point in asking,"Is this because they have little or no culture/Identity and feel the need of belonging!" Secure in a strong Canadian identity, I have no wish to be Scottish. My kilt is both for convenience, and because I carry a proud historical legacy from Gordon forbears.

I am kilt wearing Scot as are a lot of my friends. I do agree with the above statement, we do not need to wear a kilts to prove we are Scottish, however i do believe it is part of our culture and identity. I have read many quotes from people with scottish ancestory normally Americans & Canadians one stating "We will keep the scottich culture going" "We wear the kilt more than those who are from Scotland". Is this because thay have little or no culture/Identity and feel the need of belonging! Non kilt wearing Scots have nothing to prove we are in our homeland. Those of Scottish descent feel the need to wear a kilt as it is the only way to distinguish themselves as being of Scottich blood.
Lets face it, when a kilt wearing jock approaches you, what do you expect to hear "Awricht" or "Howdy"

What a chip on the shoulder some of you anti-Scots seem to have.

The Scottish "Declaration of Arbroath" from the 1300s mentions the concept of sovereignty of the people over-riding sovereignty of the King. This was an influence on the American constitution, so for Alex to say that Scots distrusted democracy is a leap too far in selective memory, in my opinion.

Who knows where the kilt came from, but the Scots have been wearing the feileadh beag, and the feileadh mor, for centuries; long before a certain buffoon called King George decided to combine them with a tuxedo.

It is not true that the kilt was invented by an Englishman.
If you do a little homework, you'll find that tailored kilts dating back to the 1600s have survived. Mind you, they weren't the 8 yd. extravaganzas people associate with "traditional" knife-pleated kilts. They were far more practical garments, either box-pleated or kinguisse-pleated, and used about half the yardage of the Victorian era kilt.
No one knows for sure when the first tailored kilts were worn, but short kilts [material wrapped around the waist, fastened by a belt]and great kilts ['round the waist and over the shoulders] were true examples of Scottish ingenuity.
If Scots living in Scotland won't wear them, then we who are of the Scottish diaspora will do so with pride.

I was under the impression that the Scottish political heritage (Mel Gibson excepted) was one of autocracy, clinging to feudal clan loyalties, and distrust of democracy. And I say that as an American where newly Hanover-loving Jacobite Highlanders were the backbone of the monarchy's last grasp at crushing local popular rule. Many from Ulster and the south may have redeemed the Scottish name a little, but Mr. Jefferson clearly saw the "Scotch and foreign mercenaries" as enemies of liberty.

and they assault English people in Scotland. In recent times, bravehearts have bashed an eight year old boy for wearing an England shirt, assaulted a disabled Englishman and the most recent an English woman in Aberdeen.
Stick your scottish pride up your arses.

What Scots need is independence and fast.

And I say that as an Englishman. So long and thanks for all the shortbread.
