Chicago, I think you're right: songwriters can find examples to inspire and to imitate from a wide range of styles. I host an annual student concert of Beatles music and somebody almost always wants to include something from "The White Album."

Bill, I think they simply wanted a different drum sound. They had been playing with heavy compression on the drums, but laying tea towels over the drums gave an even punchier sound. Today, we can wonder why anyone would want to rob the drums of their resonance, but back then, it was THE sound.

I think another factor must be the changes in amplification systems. I remember doing the same thing with my drums and having to mic my kit for the first time. Did you never do this?

All the best, grt

I love the songs, the melodies, harmonies and the arrangements on The White Album. What I dislike about the tracks is the sound of the drums. I can't understand why the egineers wanted to make the drums sound like toys. I can't understand why Ringo Starr was satisfied with the way the drums were mixed.

I remember being stunned how they played different styles of music, not only great, but making it all sound new!

A truly brilliant album(s), took me few listenings to truly appreciate it. I also love the demos the Beatles did in preparation for the recording of the album.

I remember putting on the disks, reveling at the quality of the sound, and wondering where Harrison's Indian music had gone. The focus of the Sgt Pepper track "Within You without You" was gone. In its place was the distorted insanity of "Savoy Truffle." Man, what an album.

I recall decorating the Christmas tree that last week of November 1968 while listening to my brand new "white album". It was a perfect complement to the wild, emotional roller coster ride we all took in 68'. The album was schtzophrenic, beautiful, violent, hopeful, disparing, upbeat, bluesy...... just so unpredictable and outright scary for a Beatles album. It perfectly complemented the scary nature of 1968.
