I know my questions may not be relevant to the word "hello".
At what periods was an H pronounced in French? It disappeared early in Latin pronunciation.
Does its presence in English words borrowed from French indicate that it was borrowed from written texts or that English writers knew about the French spelling?

I like Scott's suggestion that "syllables to call attention . . . are freely varied for sonorous effect." You can call someone's attention in English with /hai/, /hei/, or /hou/, but not with /hi/, /ha/, or /hu/. I've wondered if the diphthong has something to do with this distribution. Are /hau/ and /hoi/ attested as "attention-getters"?

Is Spanish "hola" a borrowing from Germanic languages, or does it have a Latin antecedent?
