I can't imagine reading the dictionary on its own. Dictionary words are often not words in practice; it is very different understanding the meaning of a word from reading a lot of current literature than what is in the dictionary. Most of the time when I use the dictionary is when someone else asks me for the meaning of a word. I then will go to the dictionary for the meaning of a word. More often, people ask what the spelling of a word is than the actually meaning of a word.
