Sorry for being late guys:) Joe, what do you mean religion is silly? Tell me what's wrong with religion? Are you saying you are against churches and Vatican, that only are interested in gainin more power? Then i agree, but religions have nothing to do with it. If only every person would follow the rules that catholic should follow, i believe, the world would be much better place to live.
For example take a look at <a href="http://mydeepmeditation.com/meditation/guided-meditation/catholic-guided-meditation" rel="nofollow">catholic meditation</a> and tell we what's wrong with it?
I hope you still follow this post and we will have some great discussion.

to d. johnson: sorrry to disagree, but the hammer was no where large enough. throughout history the catholic church has, and will always murder those who differ with them wheever they think they can get away with it. the media has always turned a blind eye to the the pope and his murderous ways.

Your overall point is well taken, but I wish you would have used a smaller hammer to make it. I think your larger argument supposes a narrowly normative system of beliefs and practices for a category that also includes 1) more or less descriptive historiography 2) plurality of thought as to just what is meant by this historiography.
