There may be only one “City of Light,” or the wettest place on Earth (that’s Tutunendo, Columbia if you’re wondering), but geographical claims to fame are numerous and well distributed. Occasionally, they’re also disputed. The Mushroom Capital of the World is a prime example. Now you might not think that such a title would be contested, but in fact, both Richmond, Missouri, and Kennett Square, Pennsylvania have crowned themselves king of edible fungi. But while mushroom hunting is a popular pastime in Richmond, it is their Eastern rival that’s actually at the center of an agricultural area that produces nearly half of this cash crop in the United States—upwards of 300 million pounds a year. An annual fall festival also draws thousands of fungus-lovers to this village in the Brandywine Valley.
