Quotes in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Well it is sad to say the end of August is upon us. The good news is that it is time to discuss Huckleberry Finn. To get your brain back into book club mode I thought we would start slow. What was your favorite quote in the book? I’ll share mine to start things off.

“Music is a good thing.” (150) I just love the simple, honest sentiment from Huck at a time when the king is spouting lies. Share your favorite quotes in the comments.

It’s hard to choose a favorite, but I am blown away by how well this quote, from the end of chapter 19, establishes why Huck is simply a better protagonist than Tom Sawyer: “If I never learnt nothing else out of pap, I learnt that the best way to get along with his kind of people is to let them have their own way.” The experience conveyed by this line suggests that, through his rough upbringing, Huck is, in fact, “educated” in a way that other children aren’t. It goes a long way towards making him understandable to all ages as he faces some of the moral choices later in the book.
