Hopefully I’m reminded of the lines from Milton’s “Paradise Lost”, something like:

There is no doubt in my mind that it is the angling word, merely updated for cyber-fishing. These days I often see the phrase "don't feed the trolls" in internet usage, meaning "don't bother respond to so-and-so, you will just provoke further stupidity". I suspect that those who use this phrase are unaware of its origin. I can’t remember when I first heard troll used in the present internet sense, but it was at least 10 years ago.
